Yesterday I fell asleep while playing this new CD by Goh Lee Kwang, which in the world of John Cage is probably a compliment. It happened during the long piece 'Weightifwax', which is curious ambient piece for electronic insects and mild feedback like sounds. An excellent piece I think. Not because I fell asleep, but something I noted when fully awake. Its not easy to say what Goh Lee Kwang is doing here, in relation to what I heard previously by him - turntable and no-input mixer - but the general quiet mood worked excellent. As said its a long piece, well over thirty-seven minutes, after which 'Touchpoint' works as a nasty wake-up call. Although not as noisy as some of his previous work, this loud block of high pitched sounds, nervous, is not so much my cup of tea. The other main tour de force, although 'just' fifteen minutes, is 'Weightofdust', which is even more subdued and sounds like metal wires being played which an extended use of reverb, pushed to the far end quiet side of the sound spectrum. 'Endless' closes down the CD with a strange bouncing rhythm that slows down over the course of the piece, and is a bit like a cover version of Alvin Lucier's 'Clocker'. Plus there are two more pieces that are so short they go by hardly noticed. Without that 'Touchpoint' intermission, I think this is by far the best work I heard from Goh Lee Kwang. A great variety in approaches to sound material, resulting in some very fine and refined music. Maybe a bit more info on the cover wouldn't do no harm though.

2. 22nd Jan, Concert!
Jason Kahn, sound artist from US currently based in Zurich, will visit Kuala Lumpur to launch his new cd "Beautiful Ghost Wave", release on Herbal, on 22nd Jan at the newly open jam studio Pinkfono. Jason will perform a solo set on analog synthesizer, we will play a duo set with Jason on analog synthesizer, me on mixer feedback. This event is co-organize by Herbal & Pinkfono.

Goh Lee Kwang (family name Goh) is internationally recognized sound & new media artist from Malaysia. He has created sound installations, sonic-visual interactive installations, single channel video, multi-channels video, electro-acoustic improvised music performance, tape music, composition for radio broadcast and soundtrack for theater / dance / independent movie. Goh's works focus on the various possibility of both realistic & abstract, crossing the boundaries of digital & analog, electronic & acoustic, go beyond language, allowing audiences to experience the work directly, and in their own personal way. Most of his installation also operating interactively with the audience/ viewer.

His first one-person exhibition 'Sound, Video, Visual, Media & Installation' shown in 2 venues: National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur & R.A.P. (Rumah Air Panas) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2005; his second one-person exhibition 'Good Vibrations' shown in 3 venues, REKA Art Space, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2007; Fluctuating Images, Stuttgart & Künstlerhäuser Worpswede, Worpswede, Germany 2008. In 2009 his third one person exhibition 'Wiring' including a 30mins video, a live performance, 2 short piece video (looped), some drawing & a sound piece, were taken place at Findars Space & KLPac (Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center), both in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Goh also gave concerts in cities such as Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi in Asia; in cities such as Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Stockholm, Ljubljana, Zürich & Budapest. He was 4 times touring Europe (2004, 2007, 2008 & 2010), plus many other concerts during his stay for a longer period in Europe.

Other short term Artist-In-Residency programs including KHOJ, New Delhi, India 2006; STEIM, Amsterdam, The Netherlands 2007; WORM, Rotterdam, The Netherlands 2007 & Green Papaya, Manila, Philipines 2007-2008.

Goh is currently the founder/ project manager of Herbal Project, organizing various events on experimental & electronic arts in the capital of his home country Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, including the monthly event "Switch ON" & many other independent concerts. Goh is also the founder of the experimental music label Herbal International & one of the founders of Experimental Artists Co-op Malaysia (EMACM). Herbal International released cd by Eric Cordier, Eric La Casa, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Cédric Peyronnet, Beequeen, Roel Meelkop, Sabine Ercklentz, Andrea Neumann, Jason Kahn, Zbigniew Karkowski & others. EMACM is a collaborative project dedicated to the facilitation, publication and exposure of creative & experimental works from the region.

The Opening Speech

Goh Lee Kwang befindet sich in der Tradition der Musique Concrète, Ende der Vierziger in Frankreich von Pierre Schaeffer gegründet. „ Es wurde mir vorgeworfen, so Pierre Schaeffer, das Geräusch in die Musik eingeführt zu haben. Eher auf das Gegenteil bin ich stolz (...) Komponisten und Zuhörer habe ich aufgefordert, ihr Gehör von der Konvention des Zuhörens zu befreien, indem sie den primären Gegensatz zwischen Klang und Geräusch in Frage stellen; dadurch konnten sie das musikalische Potenzial entdecken, das in gewöhnlich als Geräusche wahrgenommenen Tönen oder auch die impliziten Geräusche in so genannten reinen Tönen steckt“. Ausgangspunkt der Installation von Goh Lee Kwang „Vibrate Weather“ sind Geräusche und Klänge, die er aus dem Fenster seines Studios in Kuala Lumpur aufgenommen hat: Regen, Wind, Sturm, insgesamt drei Stunden Samples, die zum Teil unverändert, zum Teil elektronisch verarbeitet zu hören sind. Die Samples sind in der Regel zwei Minuten lang und werden per Zufall gespielt, so dass die Möglichkeit der Kombinationen fast unendlich ist.

Aber Vibrate Weater ist nicht nur eine Akusmatische Installation (akusmatisch nennt man ein Geräusch, das man hören kann, ohne dessen Ursachen zu sehen), es hat auch mit den großen Spiegeln, die im Raum stehen und eine Art Schutz vor dem Unwetter zu bilden scheinen, einen starken visuellen Charakter. Die musique acousmatique brachte eine neue Art des Zuhörens mit sich, jedoch konnte keiner voraussehen, wie sehr es für das Publikum eine Plage sein würde, sich im Konzertsaal mit leerer Bühne auf unbewegliche Lautsprecher konzentrieren zu müssen. Damit Klänge und visuelle Elemente, wie in Vibrate Weather, auf derselben Ebene der Wahrnehmung funktionieren können, muss die Musik oder der Klang die Sakralität des Konzertsaals aufgeben und Formen der Aufführung finden, die der Möglichkeit ihrer Wiederholbarkeit und ihrer Instrumenten- und Interpretenlosigkeit entsprechen.

Goh Lee Kwang gehört zu jenen Klangkünstlern, die die von der Musique Concrète verursachte Trennung zwischen Sehen und Hören aufheben. Das Visuelle Element, die Spiegelfolien geraten je nach Klang paarweise in Schwingung, so dass man deren Entwicklung nicht nur hört, sondern auch sieht, manchmal sogar sieht, bevor man sie hört. Die Klänge, die hier ertönen, finden nicht mehr als Musik in einem organisierten Zeitsegment statt, denn diese kennt weder Anfang noch Ende und wird hier auch wie ein Bild ausgestellt. Hier ist der Klang ein Element des Visuellen, wird das Visuelle zu einem Element des Klangs.

Goh Lee Kwang is working in the tradition of Musique Concrete, which was founded by Pierre Schaeffer towards the end of the 1940s. “I was reproached“ writes Pierre Schaeffer, „ to have introduced noise into music. I am proud of the contrary (…), because I asked composers and listeners to free themselves from the convention of listening by questioning the contrast between sound and noise; only by doing that could they discover the musical potential, which is hidden in tunes which are usually heard as noise or which are noise implicit in pure tunes.” The starting point of Goh Lee Kwang’s installation “Vibrate Weather” are noises and sounds, which he recorded from the window of this studio in Kuala Lumpur: Rain, wind, storm – altogether three hours of samples, which can be heard in their natural or partially electronic format. The samples are normally two minutes long and are played accidentally, which allows for their infinite combinations.

But „Vibrate Weather“ is not only an acusmatic installation („acusmatic“ means that we can hear some noises without realizing their origin), it also has a strong visual character due to the big mirrors, which are set up in the room and which form some kind of protection against extreme weather. Musique acousmatique was accompanied by a new kind of listening, but no one could foresee the frustration of an audience, which has to concentrate on an empty stage with immovable loudspeakers. In order for sounds and visual elements – like in Vibrate Weather – to work on the same level of sensual perception, music or sounds have to relinquish the sacrosanct aura of the concert hall and find different formats of performance, which correspond to the repetition and to the lack of instruments and interpreters.

Goh Lee Kwang is one of those sound artists, who abolish the separation between watching and listening, which was caused by Musique Concrete. The visual element, the mirror sheets begin swinging together with the sound in such a way that their development is not only audible, but also visual, before they can be heard. The sounds that can be heard do not happen as music during certain duration of time, because they have no beginning and no end but are exhibited like pictures. Sound becomes an element of visual experiences; the visuality becomes an element of sound.

Review:
Behind PM are Goh Lee Kwang (mixer feedback) and Olaf Hochherz (piezo). I remember reviewing a rather obscure 3"CDR by them, but this one is actually quite nice. Four pieces, recorded in three different places in Berlin, with only few days in between (so you can tour a city!) of an endless stream of feedback like sounds and small crackles and big noise. It emerges on the borders of improvised music, electro-acoustic, microsound as well as noise. I know this sounds like a strange mixture, but it works well here. A great work, a strong leap forward.
